Check the requirement shown on the form
Do not rely on a generic number if the USCIS page next to your evidence slot shows a different requirement. Some flows can have form-specific limits, document-count rules, or format notes.
- confirm the maximum file size on the current page;
- check whether PDF is accepted for that evidence slot;
- check whether the file can be added with other files or must be submitted in one session;
- keep clear titles so the evidence is understandable after submission.
Use the USCIS 12 MB preset
Open Compress PDF, choose your PDF, and select the USCIS 12 MB preset. The tool compares the result with the target and shows whether the compressed PDF is under the selected limit.
If the document is much larger than 12 MB, fix the source first: reduce oversized photos, remove duplicate pages, split unrelated evidence into separate files when the USCIS page allows it, or scan again at a lower resolution.
Use safe file names
USCIS guidance for online evidence commonly restricts file names to English letters, numbers, spaces, periods, hyphens, underscores, and parentheses. The Utilio preset checks for characters outside that safer set.
- use descriptive names such as Joint lease 2025.pdf;
- avoid @, $, slashes, emojis, and non-English characters in the file name;
- do not use a password-protected or encrypted PDF unless the current USCIS page explicitly says otherwise.
Review the PDF before adding it
Compression can make scanned pages harder to read. Open the compressed file and review the pages before adding it to the account.
- all pages are visible and in order;
- small text, signatures, dates, and stamps are readable;
- the file opens without a password prompt;
- the final size and file name match the current USCIS form requirements.
For private immigration documents, a browser-local workflow is useful because the PDF is processed on your device. See what no upload to Utilio means for details.
Common questions
Is the USCIS file limit always 12 MB?
No single guide should override the current USCIS form page. Use the 12 MB preset when it matches the online-account requirement, and follow any form-specific limit shown in your account.
Which file name characters are safest?
Use English letters, numbers, spaces, periods, hyphens, underscores, and parentheses. Avoid special characters such as @, $, slashes, emoji, and symbols unless your current USCIS page says they are accepted.
Can Utilio tell whether my evidence is legally enough?
No. Utilio only helps prepare the file format, size, and basic checks. It does not review immigration evidence or guarantee USCIS acceptance.
Does Utilio upload the PDF?
For the local Compress PDF workflow, the PDF is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to Utilio servers.
Should I combine all evidence into one PDF?
Only when the current USCIS page and the evidence type make that clear. Separate, clearly named files can be easier to review when the account allows multiple files.
