Start with the actual account limit
Before compressing, open the IRCC account or checklist where the document will be submitted and confirm the current per-file limit. Do not assume every IRCC flow uses the same number.
- Use 2 MB when the form or checklist is strict or unclear;
- use the exact account limit when it is shown next to the document slot;
- keep the original scan until the submitted copy is accepted by the account.
Use the IRCC 2 MB preset
Open Compress PDF, choose the PDF, and set the portal file limit to IRCC-style 2 MB. The tool first tries a lighter optimization and then stronger page rendering when the target still is not met.
If the result is under the target, download it and open it in a PDF viewer. If the result is still over the target, remove blank pages, crop scan borders, lower scan resolution, or split unrelated documents into separate files when the IRCC instructions allow that.
Check readability after compression
A tiny target can make scan quality worse. Review the final PDF at normal and zoomed-in sizes before you submit it.
- names, dates, document numbers, and stamps are readable;
- all pages are present and in the right order;
- signatures and seals are not blurred beyond recognition;
- the final file size is below the account limit.
Keep sensitive documents local
Immigration documents often contain passports, IDs, addresses, finances, and family records. A browser-local workflow reduces the need to send that PDF to a third-party compression server.
For Utilio’s local compression workflow, the file is processed in your browser. Read what no upload to Utilio means for the privacy model and its limits.
Common questions
Does every IRCC document have a 2 MB limit?
No. IRCC limits vary by account and application type. Use the number shown in your account when it is available; the 2 MB preset is for strict or low-limit situations.
Can Utilio guarantee IRCC will accept the PDF?
No. Utilio can help reduce size and run local checks, but the final account rules and document requirements decide whether the file is accepted.
What if the PDF is still over 2 MB?
Try removing blank pages, lowering scan resolution, cropping large empty borders, or splitting documents only when the IRCC instructions allow separate files.
Is the PDF uploaded to Utilio?
For the local Compress PDF workflow, the PDF is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to Utilio servers.
Should I keep the original scan?
Yes. Keep the original until the account confirms the compressed copy is acceptable, especially for immigration records.
